Benefits of Hospice Services for Those with End Stage COPD

Holding Hands

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD is an umbrella term that describes progressive lung diseases including emphysema, chronic bronchitis and refractory, or non-reversible asthma. As the third leading cause of death in the United States, it effects over 11 million people. Many patients currently suffering under the devastating effects of end stage COPD, who may have heart or lung failure, can find it hard to catch their breath even while resting. Hospice care offers relief for these patients and their families.

The Hospice Conversation

The hospice conversation is an important one and doesn’t have to be difficult. Knowing what services are available to you and your family is empowering at a time when you may not feel powerful. When you and your loved ones recognize hospice as a resource it’s easier for you to make informed decisions about next steps in the progression of your care.

Should I be Considering Hospice?

As a patient moves through the four stages of COPD, increasing support from inhalers and pulmonary rehabilitation can help manage symptoms. When a patient is no longer responding to treatments, it may be time to consider hospice care. You may be a patient who is not a candidate for additional medical procedures, or you may have decided not to pursue additional treatment. These are some of the many circumstances in which hospice can provide comfort and support.
