Enjoy the Sun Without the Burn, Practice UV Safety

UV Safety

UV SafetySummer is the season to relax and enjoy being outside and it’s also the most important time to be mindful of your skincare routine. UVA/UVB rays are harmful all year but they can be especially damaging during the summer months because spending free time at the pool, the park or in the yard gives you extra sun exposure. The following summer skincare tips will help you and your family enjoy being outside while minimizing the danger and discomfort of sun burn.

Apply that sunscreen! It’s recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology that you apply a teaspoon size amount to your face and approximately 2 ounces to your body, that’s about as much as would fill a shot glass. It’s also recommended to re-apply every two hours, and even more often if you are in the water.

Your lips need sunscreen, too; look for balm with SPF of 15 or higher and reapply regularly. Don’t forget the sensitive skin along your hairline and in the part of your hair; in addition to sunscreen, wearing a hat with a brim will help to keep you cool and comfortable.

What if you forgot the sunscreen or didn’t apply enough and now you’ve got a burn? Unfortunately, some damage has been done but you don’t have to suffer in pain. Soothing gels made with cooling aloe are recommended to help reduce the sting and prevent peeling, redness and inflammation.

Preventing sun damage is key because severe sunburn can increase your risk for skin cancer. Remember to get a skin check as part of your annual doctor’s exam. It’s recommended to perform a self-exam once a month to look for early warning signs of carcinoma or malignant melanoma; any new growth or skin changes should be reported to your medical professional.

Summer is the time to enjoy being outside. Preparing in advance by applying plenty of sunscreen and having a hat handy, you and your family can take in the warm weather while reducing the pain and worry that accompanies a sun burn.
